OK- let me see, you had a default judgment issued against you 12 years ago in NJ. It has not been enforced until recently. Judgments of any kind are enforceable in NJ for 20 years.
You need a lawyer to petition the court to set aside the enforcement., or to negotiate a settlement.
You may, if you wish, try to sue your ex for "his part" of the loss, however, it will probably be too late as the time to have done that would have been within 6 years of the default judgment being issued against you.
Judgments on record can be enforced without any further collection activities from the collection agency lawyer.
