I really need some advice. i was in a auto accident on 7/10/00. I did have health insurance & I was taken to the emergency room. I was had surgery the next day & I was in the hospital for 5 days. The hospital never got any insurance information from me or had me to sign any forms. I did get a lawyer & sued the other person, I did receive a settlement. My lawyers office said all of my medical bills were paid & they did receive a letter from my health insurance saying that I did not have to pay them back. Well 6 months later I get a bill from the hospital for 12k. I told them that I had insurance & to bill them. Well the hospital said that my insurance denied the bill because the hospital put the bill as inpatient & didn't code it correctly showing that I was taken directly to the ER in an ambulance. With my insurance I always have to have a referral unless your taken to the ER. My insurance said that if the hospital would have coded the bill right they would have paid for it. I tried to work it out with the hospital & explained to them what my insurance said. They wouldn't do anything. Plus they billed my health insurance over a year later. Now they have turned me over to a collections agency & I refuse to pay the bill. I know that they could try to garnish my wages. What should I do?
