Mailbox is a good idea.

Messing with your credit report is collection activity - they code it as a collection. It's called "poisoning" your file. It's in one of the FTC opinion letters on the FCRA. Actually, it's about reporting, not inquiries, but I don't doubt that this does not constitute "permissible purpose" - FCRA.

Got any kind of paper trail, or is this all over the phone?

As far as two party state and recording - have someone else listen. Tell them it's a scam and you are trying to "nab" the bad guys.

If they have put anything on your credit report, apply for credit immediately - to really sue for money, you have to have damages, and someone else has to see that report, not just you.

If your current address and employer are on your report, they have it. Experian likes to put what you eat for breakfast and your favorite brand of toilet paper on theirs ;)
