check problems

I had written a check for $5.00 and it bounced. I thought that the check was sent back to the bank. According to this collection agency which I never heard from, it was not picked up. Now 3 years later I received a letter from a law firm saying if I didn't agree to a $331 dollar settlement, I would be sued and have to go to court. At the end of the letter-they said they were debt collectors. I didn't know lawyers were debt collectors. Please Help!
