Telling them your reason of "getting fired because of a judgement" will definitely make them MORE reluctant to settle with you. They know they have something over your head and will use it to get the full amount. You DID do right by NOT giving them a payment over the phone. If you do pay ONLY send them a money order. They'll suck you're account dry. They could care less if you're on a bed half dead they're greedy and compassionless. I don't think you're even dealing with discover. Sounds like you're dealing with a collection agency. They'll lead you to think they're the original creditor. Probably need to find out if your account has been charged off and who it has been sold to. So don't talk to anyone on the phone until you find out what's really going on (could call Discover and ask them about your account..CALL NUMBER THAT'S ON YOUR BILLING STATEMENTS THOUGH and not any number from someone you've talked to on the phone and don't really know where they called from). Are you still receiving billing statements for the card? If not you can be sure it's charged off and probably with a collection agency. Usually credit card accounts are charged off after 120 days late or so. Also, get your credit reports from experian, equifax, and transunion. You can get a free trial on experian and see what's going on. You'll probably find your account has been charged off and a collection agency has it. Please be careful with the counseling services..lots are phony and will tell you anything you want to hear. Others will help you even more.
