You CAN file for bankruptcy without a lawyer, but, as will most legal issues, a man who is his own attorney has a fool for a client.

Filing for bankruptcy is very complicated. If you get anything wrong you can either have your case dismissed and get no discharge, or you could get your discharge and STILL end up paying creditors or losing assets because you didn't do the forms correctly. THAT is why it is recommended you get a lawyer.. its NOT that easy in 99% of the cases.

Filing Pro Se can be done, but most people who do are so overwhelmed by the legal process and mountians of paperwork that they must handle, and handle correctly, that it can be VERY daunting.

If you need to file, STOP paying your bills, save that money for an attorney. Its going to cost you $200 in filing fees no matter what you do. Find an attorney that will take payments until their fee is paid and then they'll file (usually). You obviously have to shop for one that will do this, but if you're in so deep you must file, its worth it to have the peace of mind that it will be done RIGHT.

Its hardly an oxymoron.
