If you are talking about a summons on a debt,if you do not appear, the plaintiff will get a default judgment.

If you send the Court and the plaintiff a request for a continuence and give a valid reason, such as -you need time to obtain a lawyer, or you are in the hospital or some other valid reason, and if you do it in time,in the proper form and send it CRRR,you MAY get a continuence.
