No banking with ChexSystems rap???

I'm 26 with 4 small children.....In trying to open up a checking account last week I found I was denied because of NSF activity posted with Chex Systems 2 years ago. The account was paid in full5 months later. The NSF activity was brought on by an old boyfriend who used my ATM card to withdrawl $20 already spoken for. I called the bank to ask them to delete it since it was paid and was told no, it must remain for 5 years. How can I work with this? I need an account, other then on-line. It is costing me a fortune to cash checks...HELP!!!!!
