You MAY be within the 2 year limit in Cal. for an oral contract. That is what you had with your "friend" unless you had something in writing from him that said he would be responsible for any damages to you by virtue of your co-signing.

You will need copies of everything, and file in small claims court as a defaulted oral contract. It was not a personal loan.
