I'm not really sure about products, but certainly services can hit you card immediately. Expedia.com is a good example, great prices, but immediate bang. I'm pretty sure your card will receive at least an authorization to pay immediately, that's common. Whether it's collected or not depends on the services/products being delivered (like motel rooms and rent cars, etc).
