Montgomery Wards collecting old debt?

I just got a call from someone who is trying to collect a debt from 1992....an old Montgomery Wards account that went into collections, then I never heard from them (M.W. went bankrupt in 1992)until today. Can they actually collect on this debt after all this time? I told the guy they would have to mail something to me, that I wouldn't do anything over the telephone. Could this be a scam or do you think it's legit? Any ideas on how I check this out?
