Have you considered filing for bankruptcy? It will be on your record for the same amount of time and will put a stop to the collection efforts.

In addition, you will not have to endure receiving court papers and the like.

It will relieve a lot of stress and let you focus on what's important, your family; not the mail or phone calls.
