questions about cc settlement

I have some $ but I have herd that you can settle with the credit card companies. But I have looked around and it looks like I have to miss payments to be able to settle, if I'm going to lose my job and I know it will the settle with me for a %? This is what I would like to know and if they will what is a good start% for me to think about paying off.
