Interesting point in experian credit report

I just got my credit report through Experian and noticed something quite strange. They're saying that I have $12,107 in outstanding debt, $7202 of that being on my car that I paid off 4 months ago. The other debt makes sense but this VW thing really seems to be affecting my score. How can I get that updated to where it does *not* show up as outstanding debt? I don't think that the credit report I got from equifax listed it that way.
