Items past SOL recently being added to credit report?

Is it legal for an item that is past SOL to appear on your great report? I haven't received a bill from them for the service and now I pull a report and it states new entry and there it is. What can I do? I am sure I paid this with a moneyorder (no checking account at the time), but I have misplaced documentation. Should I contact the office and reoffer to pay if they expunge it from my records? Also, what about a non-profit hospital that your are making payments on suddenly telling you that you have to pay NOW? Is this egal? They switched me to their "credit" service, which is inhouse, but because my bill wasn't high enough they won't work with me. Any suggestions? Thanks
