Past SOL-what do I do? Help!!!!!!

I am receiving a bill from a doctor that is past SOL by 2 years. Now I have noticed on my credit report a debt from 1997 as being reported effective 9/2002. Is this legal? Can they report it - to a collection agency no less this long after the debt since it is past SOL? What can I do? Can I have it deleted? I am trying to pay bills, not add old ones. Please help!
