Is it legal for a lawyer to claim they represent a plaintiff when in fact they have no agreement or contract with the plaintiff?

Also, is it legal for the original holder of a debt to sell the debt, then bring suit against someone over that debt? Seems to me they'd lose that right once the debt is sold...
