I ran across this site while searching for SOL info. Had no idea SOL applied to civil cases until a company attorney mentioned the 4 year CA SOL when a vendor sued my employer over an old matter.

It was pure dumb luck that I wasn't sued over the 4 open accounts (about $25K) I stopped paying in 1997! These were opened from 1986-91, lost a good job in 93. Made barely enough to survive for almost 6 years (as well as pay over $5K each year to those crooks), until I realized the balances were even greater than when I stopped charging in 92. Chase was the worst - 25.9% APR, $29 late fee, $29 over limit fee. Actual APR with fees had to be 40%. Plus one of their collectors was a foul-mouthed New Yorker - stopped talking to him in 96 and hung up every time I heard his voice. Chase must have started calling up every number in the state listed under my surname because 2 uncles (in an area I had never lived near) told me Chase wanted to contact me about an unpaid bill. I realized I'd be a debt slave for the rest of my life if this kept up, though I had already paid more than the principal.

So- clueless, I decided to evade them. First, told them I had no employer since 93 - true since I was minimally self-employed. Also, told them the mailing address and phone number was a friend's (was actually under my wife's maiden name). Then, got a PO Box in another part of the state that I worked in regularly. The telephone number was changed shortly after to an unlisted, and the payments stopped. I paid off the student loan and (bless them!)Sears, because one never knows when an appliance will break.

Realizing that paying one VISA would attract the other sharks, I invested the cash. Got a good job 3 years ago. You know, even in a community property state, you can quit-claim a newly purchased house to one spouse. Protects the spouse from debt incurred before marriage. (The CAs asked her if she was my wife, she always told them she was "a friend" and never gave her name.) Now, I just wait 2 more years for them to drop from the CRs and keep the CAs from re-aging any. Cavalry Investments has the Citibank balance as a "new account" as of Jan 2000, and Citibank is nowhere on the reports. I'm about to send CI a nasty letter with a cc: to FTC and CRAs.

Sorry about the long story. It may be helpful to someone who has 'friends' willing to conduct them on the Underground Railroad to freedom!
