I am in an industry where credit checks and background checks are a part of employment process - the importanat thing is to be honest about it when dealing with future employers or bonding companies (I am bonded). It does not rule out employment with most unless you are dishonest about it.

As far as insurance goes - what state are you in? Some states do not allow them to hold bk against you, some do not even allow credit to be used for rating.

Incidentally, a "settled for less than owed" notation is just as bad in these situations as bk, also not as bad as unpaid judgments.

I would make sure you are set for the next couple of years - employment, apartment, insurance, etc, see a lawyer to see if you qualify, then file before they pull that bk bill out of the ditch and get it back on track in the next couple of months.
