I was co-signer... He filed Bankruptcy!

I had a joint account with my ex, who was making payments on time until March of this year. The creditor called and told me that they could not get ahold of him, and a payment needed to be made the next day or they would report me. I gladly paid it.
They called the next day and said they reached him and he would resume making payments. I checked my credit report yesterday and that credit was written off as BANKRUPTCY! I have excellent credit (except for this). I called the creditor to see if they would take it off. I am more than willing to pay it, if I can get it completely erased from my report. I am the co-signer, and I understand it is also my debt, but they did not even give me a chance to pay it! The creditor is telling me I need to dispute through Eqifax. This doesnt seem right. Can anyone give me some guidance? Please? I am in CA.
