My guess would be that having an AMEX account = prestige .. at least to some degree. People with good credit can have trouble getting an AMEX account, so the lure for someone with less-than-stellar credit could be a good one. However, an OPTIMA card isn't worth the plastic they make it out of. I've had one for years and only recently closed it because its so useless. The interest rate stinks, the fees they charge are ridiculous, and the limits are low.. that was even when my credit was good !
