About Tolling

I'm bringing this up as a separate thread because I am confused about what "tolling" means (I read some other threads where it's discussed but still don't have a clear idea).

All of the debts I have are old--8+ years old. They were all incurred in Michigan (where I still live). I applied for no credit in the interim. I did hold a job and file taxes. I went for several years without a valid driver's license because I didn't need a car.

The most recent address on my credit report is about seven years old (with the exception of my current address, which is now on there). Collection letters were sent to my parent's house and they were sometimes forwarded to me, but the creditors have not had a valid address or phone number for me until recently.

Does this mean that they can toll my SOL? How will I know whether they would use this as a defense--would it have to go to court?
