My husband was self employed and was sick about a year before he died (cancer). I have 3 credit cards that I have not been able to pay on since March of 2002. All cards are over $5000. Two are under the business name and the business was incorporated. My name is also on the cards. The other card is a personal card with my name alone, so I know I cannot get out of paying that one. I have always been a conscientious person paying my debts. But I simply do not have the income for all his business debt. The bank we deal with consolidated some loans and refinanced them so I could make the payments. I have tapped out all my equity. My car is not quite 5 years old and is now paid for having 150,000 miles on it. I am in NC. I have been told not to accept any certified letters from the collection agencies and I have been advised that NC will not garnish except for taxes and child support..I would appreciate any advise, info anything..My husband was screwed out of about $50,000 by a crooked truck broker and when I asked an attorney about getting that back, I was told I had two chances..slim and none...Why can't that work both ways?
