CA says account was charged off - nothing from OC

I got a call from a CA (Academy something or other) trying to collect on an AT&T Universal card. He told me AT&T charged off the account. I received nothing from AT&T - how do I know it was really charged off?

Also - this account was first turned over to United Recovery in July - they told me I was about to get sued. Now Academy has it and they say I'm about to get sued. I have been unemployed for nearly a year and am using my resources for priority living expenses.

I've spoken with a bankruptcy attorney who told me they have to send the case to a local attorney, who will then contact me for a last ditch collection effort before they actually sue. She also says if I get a court summons I can immediately file a chapter 13 to avoid a judgement before it goes to court.

I haven't filed bankruptcy yet because I still have hope of getting a comparable paying job as the one I was laid of from and being able to catch up on all my cc bills - which total approximately 30K and behind probably 4K.

I live in SC - just wondering if I'm approaching this correctly and if I'm getting good advice from attorney. If an account is charged off, does that mean I no longer have the option of paying the original creditor? Do I have to deal with collection agency?

One other thing... Academy called last week - I've gotten nothing in the mail from them - don't they have to send something in writing? They guy did do the mini miranda thing on the phone.

Thanks for your advice.
