How long can things stay on report, last activity or 1st reporting date?...

I have recently had two collections added to my account even though I was not sent a mini-miranda and these bills are from 1995 and 1997 respectively. How long do they stay on your credit? Date of last payment or activity or when they were added to credit report? Is it legal for them to be added after this long and no mini-miranda? Thanks! I am trying to learn.
