Print out a copy of your post so you will have it for your records. Collectors are required to notify you of your right to dispute even if they have communicated only by phone.

If you receive anything in writing from this collector, keep it and send a dispute letter. Tell them that the account was paid and the approximate date. This can be a very simple one line letter or you can look at some sample letters on Why Chat's web page. All that is really necessary is to communicate the message that you dispute the debt. How you choose to deliver the message is up to you.

Browse your old check registers or whatever you need to do to determine the check number of the check with which you paid Bellsouth. You can wait to get the copy of the check until you need it or you can get the copy and keep it with the rest of your notes regarding this "collection".

Wait about a month or so and then get a copy of your credit reports (all three). Look to see if the collector has made a notation on your credit reports and also look to see if there is an inquiry from them.

It's possible that they will never contact you again and there is nothing bad on your credit reports. However, in case they have reported or inquired on your credit or continue to try to collect, you want to be prepared.
