Please, please help with duplicate records on credit report!

A collection agency purchased a charged-off account so now I have the original creditor AND the collection agency reporting to Experian. The creditor has reported since 12/99 and the collection agency as of 8/2000. It makes it appear as if I have two outstanding debts instead of just one!! Is this allowed?
