Eric,

It all depends on state law. Some states you can be served with a letter sent to your last known address.
Other states that require a process server have procedures where a lawsuit can be filed if they can't find you to complete service. Obvisously, you can't serve a P.O. Box so, the lawyer can try the alternative. In many states, a legal ad in a newspaper in the last known county of residence constitute good service. It just depends on what your state alows.
