I don't even know where to begin. Here goes:

In April of 2000, my husband lost his job for several months due to a fire. I tried paying bills, and then just got so far behind that I gave up in March of 2001, when I became ill and unable to work. We could only pay the basic bills, and that's what we did, ignoring the credit card bills. I've basically just been ignoring the whole situation this far, which was pretty stupid, I admit. Last month, our 6 year old daughter unexpectedly passed away. Our lives are in a shambles, and right now I just want to get our finances back in control. We have 9 accounts in collections now for about $25000 total, plus a hospital bill for $2300, also in collections. We don't want to file bankruptcy if at all possible, because we did acquire this debt on our own and feel responsible for it. We just don't know what to do to take care of things. With this many accounts, the most we could pay to each would be around $50 a month. We have no money, though we do own a home that isn't valued at much and our vehicles that are worth very little. We live in Arkansas. Can anyone help us get things worked out? I've been talking to someone from a debt settlement company, but I'm scared to death of getting scammed, and I've heard scary stories about these organizations. I'm just at my wits end. I've got so much stress trying to deal with the grief of losing my child, and I need to do something to get my life in some semblance of order. Please help.
