BK, as Observer and Scott have said, is not all that bad a solution for you. Yes, its ugly on your credit report, it'll stay there for 10 years. However, re-establishing credit after BK is not all that hard to do, you just need to be careful what credit solutions you choose to get back on the high road. BK will actually allow you to repair your credit a LOT faster than enslaving yourselves to those nasty collectors and their threats for years to come. After a few years of good credit, the affect of the BK on your credit report lessens to a great degree.

If you want to get your life in order and eliminate a huge amount of stress in the process, allow yourselves to reconsider bankruptcy. I can well understand the moral feelings of wanting to pay the bills, believe me, I was raised that way too. Sometimes, you just have to decide to set that aside and take your lives back, its a WHOLE lot more important than paying the debts.

You have suffered a horrible tragedy.. you don't need to suffer any more over money.. its not worth it.
