A peculiar situation

I believe a family member has made purchases on my credit card without my authorization. They appear to have been placed either via phone or internet. I am in the process of investigating further, but for now, how does the creditor verify these charges? Does the creditor contact the business that the items were ordered from? Am I held responsible even though my signature cannot possibly appear anywhere relating to these charges? Thanks for responding
