Completely agree with Robert M. If Washington Mutual/Associates Bank was actually paid by your mom, you should not have been making the payments NOR should they have accepted them. They knew or should have known that they were receiving the payments in error. Further, they should never have "sold" your account to a collection agency if in fact you had no balance to sell.

If the Attorney General in your state doesn't act to your satisfaction, send a formal demand to First Select/Associates Bank/Washington Mutual and then be ready to take the matter to court. A good and fair judge will sort things out. Just make sure you or your mom has the documents that show when your account was paid, and that when it was "sold" it was actually at a zero balance.
