Silly 2nd Mortgage Question

I had a 2nd mortgage I paid off in the spring. The balance then was about $44,000. I didn't actually contact the company (Countrywide), I just sent them a check. The mortgage still appears on my report (Experien) and there is no update for the final payment. The dumb question is, is it OK to contact Countrywide and tell them to close this thing out? I assume that will help my score, but this damn stuff is so counter-intuitive I'm not sure! Thanks.
