I have not seen a single State whose Statute Of Frauds(the section that deals with this subject) allows oral promises to void or waive the SOL. In fact, in many States not only is a written contract required, but it has to fulfil very strict requirements, AND in several States even a written contract will not waive a CONSUMERS rights.

Of course, perhaps the author is referring to business contracts, or oral contracts.
