Susan,

Here's a wrinkle you need to be aware of. If you are currently in default on a cc with the bank which holds your checking or savings account they can execute what is known as an "offset" and take money out of your account. Now, Ladynred is correct if you file a bk it'll stop that possibility but, if you've not filed for bk, your money is at risk.
