car repo

I need some help. I live in VA. My car was repoed on Thursday. I thought I was caught up on payments, I hav made payments every month this year excep Oct. but guess I was still behid from last fall. I heldoff Oct.because we were going to use a cash outof a 401K to pay off the car. We didn't get eoughafter taxes so Monday I sent off two payments. Friday morning my car was gone. I called the LH as soon as they opened and was told she would review itwith her sup later that afternoon. She agreed to call me back. I never saw the repo letter becasue my kids have been getting the mail. The lady told me they may make us pay the car off in order to get to get it back.
Do I have any recourse at all ? We can pay the pastdue balance and whatever else they tack on.
Is there any way to negotiate with these people or is it too late?
Is our credit already damaged and will it matter if we get the car back?
