Bankruptcy? Yes or No?

My wife and I have a large amount of debt. More than 75% of it is medical bills from when we didn't have insurance. The rest is mostly over my states SOL. Although I may have messed that up with a debt recently when I received an unexpected phone call with the usual threats, court, garnishment, blah, blah, blah. It ended up with the collector asking what my intentions were. I told him that I would call him back because I had to get my finances together because I was out of town. Said all of that to ask this. Is bankruptcy something I should look at, or do ya'll have any suggestions as to what options I have?
