Deceased Father's Medical Bills

My father has passed away, however there are several bills left behind for his medical care.
I have heard of a law that states that any bills remaining when a person dies are waived if so requested. My question is, is this something individual states have laws on or is there a federal law on this? I am writing about bills collected in the state of Nevada.
