Keg,

If your father left an estate {in this case $2000} the creditors have a right to file a claim against the estate.
Unless the offspring signed some forms accepting responsibility for his bills, I don't see how you can be forced to pay anything. In other words, if you distributed money from his estate they well be able to claim those funds but no more.
Both La. and Nv. are community property states and it may well be possible that a surviving spouse may be responsible for a deceased individuals debts.
