I just finished my mother's estate. Did he have a will? Someone should administer the estate, paying off bills, distributing property, etc. You might go to the local library (or Barnes and Noble) and look over a book or two on estate management. Normally your father's estate would be responsible for all valid debts, including "final" expenses, like the funeral, burial plot, etc. The order of payoff for these things varies widely from state to state. In addition, if he held real estate there are more complications. The net is, you need lots more information, but you need not worry about them coming after you for his debts unless sometime in the past you agreed to pay them. You have my sympathy for your loss. It's difficult to get all this "business" done in a time of grief, but you must get moving. Good luck with it.
