help with sol and lawsuit

I live in NY and I ahve a question. We filed a chapter in june 1998. It was dismissed in march 2002. I never received any notice from the court or my attorney. I received a letter from a company that took over our car loan so that is how I knew. Since then I received a letter from a collection agency and paid off that debt.
I received a phone call from an attorney's office telling me that we were being sued and a lein was going to be place on our home. I asked to work out payment arrangements. They would not do any. I never received a letter from these people and now they tell me I am out of time the suit is being filed.
Last payment on the account was sometime in 1997 or so that was on time. I was reading your forum about the SOL but I do not understand the terms.
Please help I need to act fast.
