Cal. has a pretty big exemption for homeowners, ($75,000 equity). It also has a fair exemption for vehicles. You should get a lawyer to defend you if you can, file an answer objecting to the extra charges and interest, and demand an accounting of the $$ you paid. In addition, I believe Direct Merchants is involved in a class action lawsuit regarding their credit practices, and there has also been, I think, some fines and sanctions against them in Cal. If you go to my website, linked under "Newcomers Please Read" there is a link to NACA & Legal Aid, in addition, if you click on California on my site and scroll to the bottom, there is a link to a Bay area consumer lawyer.
