Cal. has a pretty big exemption for homeowners, ($75,000 equity).It also has a fair exemption for vehicles. You should get a lawyer to defend you if you can, file an answer objecting to the extra charges and interest, and demand an accounting of the $$ you paid.

In addition, I believe Direct Merchants is involved in a class action lawsuit regarding their credit practices, and there has also been, I think, some fines and sanctions against them in Cal.
