Spa Contract

I signed up my son for a krate club and signed a 1 year contract. When I thought that the contract was over I went to the owner/manager and asked when the contract was over. He told me I had the past month and the current month to pay plus a late fee for the past month. I paid it. When I found the orginal contract I found they had extened the contract for 1 year to 15 months. I cancelled the check to the workout club and called the manager he refused to talk to me and sent it to a collection agency. That was two years ago. I was just called by a new collection agency and they want over $500.00. The cancelled check was for $150. and I feel it was beyond the orginal contract.
They told me the contract was binding until I notified them in writing and they are going to judgement on this. How much trouble am I in? Should I be Scared and what is the best thing for me to do?
