Debt, Bankruptcy and Foreclosure and leaving the US

Hi -- we currently live in NY. Here's the saga... DH lost his job several months ago, has found no opportunities in the US, but did find one out of this contry (off the continent, for that matter). We have unsecured credit card debt, and a first and second mortgage. We had been planning on filing for a chapter 7 bankruptcy, but then this job came along for my DH. He will start sooner than the bankruptcy could be completed, and we've been advised by 3 lawyers to just leave the US, and not file, and let the house be foreclosed upon.

This is not sitting very well with us, but want to know if this does end up happening, what are the legal ramifications if we come back to the US for visits, can we be pursued out of the US by creditors and mortgage holders, and can our families here be harrassed by creditors. We haven't lived with any family in over 15 years...

Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks you,
Megan
