Then pay off the loan! I think that would be far better than defaulting! And if you are a senior, you could be anywhere over 55 (like me) and that means you might need some credit over the next 40+ years. Do you have kids? A spouse? Anyone who can help you out here -- I mean with advice and legwork. Can you get someone local to help you put an advertisement in the paper to sell the car? Let's do what is possible to affect your credit in the least destructive way!!
