Somebody please help

I have a simple question. I got a credit card back in college. I made some late payments to them. Never got more than 2 months behind. I stopped using the card in 1997. I didn't pay off the card but let a balance of $1000 stay while making only minimum payments. Without my knowledge they cancelled my card in 1998. I never found out untill 2000 when the card expired and I didn't get a new one. I called them and they then told me that they had cancelled it 2 years earlier. I was very upset. They said they had no obligation to tell me they had cancelled the card. Had I known the card was cancelled in 98 I would have paid it off since I had the money then. I think this is very very unfair and misleading. My statements even continued to say that I had x amount of credit available on my card. I have been unable to pay this card off since then. And now I'm unemployed and very behind on my payments. Do I have any rights here? Or am I just out of luck. I offered to settle with them but they refused.
