Question about time limits...

I just pulled a credit report after being overseas for appx 6 years. I have a debt that I wasn't aware of that was sold to an agency, then sold again. All 3 of these accounts show up on my credit report. The last payment was made 8-96. Now that I know, should I pay it off to the agency and ask all 3 to clear off my report, or should I wait until the 7 years are up (8-03)?? Once the 7 years are up, does all this fall off my report? I am confused. Thanks in advance for your help.
