DOLA/Charge Off/delinquency date

I live in MA, incurred the debt in LA, and the DOLA for my charged off accounts is in 10/1996..but it's still showing on my report. I have no idea when the charge offs occured. So when does the seven year time period begin? Date of last activity, Charged Off date, or the first deliquency date? How do I determine the date of the last two? What if I don't have paperwork? Please help. Can I contest this with the Credit Bureaus?
