Credit report question

Just received my credit report and i have a question? On my Experian Report under the section of "Requests Viewed Only By You", i believe most of these are Commercial preapproved cards and stuff, anyways do these request hurt your Rating (score). If they do is there anyway i can stop them. there is one company Providian Financial who has 20 request since 11/10/00 and Capital One has 2 in like 2 days. Funny part is i have a Capital One card in good standing yet they still me Junk Mail for Credit Cards all the time.
