I can't quite interpret New York laws (who can).

I need your advice where is the next best step to handling this deficiency balance matter:

1) Had auto repossesed in 97 in New York
2) Bank sold the car at auction and there was a balance owed.
3) I would pay this balance but it's not gonna help me or my credit at this point.
4) I want to know if I still *legally* owe this debt so I can tell this scum CA to suck off.
5) I do recall getting a note from the bank about the sale of the vehicle and the balance owed a few weeks after the repo but I don't recall getting a notice about my right of retaining the car at an auction where and when it was to be auctioned.

These points being established, what can you tell me? I'm in New Jersey now but all this happened in New York as stated earlier.

As far as the CA I already have them on violations including trying to collect across state lines without the proper bond/license to operate in my state. More importantly I want to make sure I don't *legally* owe this debt anymore before I give the CA the finger.

Thanks in advance.
